Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day) is our community's biggest annual celebration, and this year's concert will be no exception. This Tuesday, April 28th over 1,500 members of our community will be moving to the world beat of Gaya, one of Israel's most-loved musical groups. Best known for their anthem Yachad (Song for Love), Gaya’s sound and feel are rooted in Israel, North Africa, Turkey and the West. Tickets are $14 at www.ticketmaster.ca or 604.280.4444, and they’re going fast. New location: The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts.

Yom Hazikaron
The Yom Ha’atzmaut evening will open, as always, with the conclusion of Yom Hazikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day) and a moment of silence in memory of Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. There is also a separate Yom Hazikaron ceremony taking place the evening before, on Monday April 27th at the JCCGV. This past year has been one of challenges for Israel, especially for those living in Southern Israel in towns like Sderot, and for the soldiers recently deployed in Gaza and their families. This is an important time to show our solidarity with Israel, and one way to do that is to stand together as a community at next week’s events.

This season of memory and celebration opened this past Monday evening, as Vancouver joined communities across the country in observing Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) with a concert and a first-hand account from child survivor, Robbie Waisman. The solemn evening, coordinated byt the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, included a candle-lighting in memory of the six million who perished.

Jewish Federation is proud to support these events that educate, honour and inspire as part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a strong connection to Israel and our collective history.
